Within an Augustinian educational context, your son will be on a journey to graduate with humility, a sense of prayerfulness and community, and a restless search for truth. These Augustinian core values are the foundation of the Augustinian Wellbeing in Education (AWE) Program in which boys build their social and emotional capacity through the PERMA model of positive education - positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment.

The Augustinian Educational Apostolate states that teaching in an Augustinian school “should always be regarded as essentially a pastoral activity”. Therefore, building positive relationships within the community is a priority. With this at the forefront of our mind, the College has six House Formation Leaders working with Year 10-12 students and three Student Formation Leaders alongside three Assistant Student Formation Leaders supporting our Year 7-9 students, who lead with a team of Tutors to provide a continuous relationship for your son. Every day begins with fifteen minutes of Tutor time, where boys can connect with each other and their Tutor before embarking on their day of learning. This ensures every student and their parents have at least one staff member who ‘truly know them’. We believe the title ‘Formation Leaders’ reflects the importance of the role our wellbeing staff play in helping to form our young men’s character.

Aligned with our Catholic faith, the management of human conflict is based on empathy and forgiveness. We employ restorative practice processes when dealing with the sensitive issues around restoring human relationships.

Our Wellbeing Team

St Augustine’s College believes that 'every teacher is a teacher of wellbeing', with all teaching and administrative staff participating in professional learning regarding student wellbeing. We also have an extensive team of highly experienced and dedicated staff in middle leadership positions to provide additional support for our boys on their academic journey. As well as our Head of Primary and Deputy Principals, there is a Leader of Student Wellbeing, Student Co-ordinator, Learning Support & Enrichment Co-ordinator, Executive Officer International Students, International Academic Advisor, Careers Advisor, College Psychologists, College Chaplains, Student Formation Leaders (Year 7-9) and House Formation Leaders (Year 10-12).

College Psychologists 

An integral part of our support for student wellbeing and our families is the provision of two Registered Psychologists.

Significant progress has been made to promote and de-stigmatise the use of counselling services, and many of our students who are working with our psychologists self-refer. Our College Psychologists liaise very closely with all key stakeholders in the care of our students and encourage early intervention through the provision of counselling, education and prevention initiatives.  

Meet Shiva. A special canine (Schnoodle) who adds a calming influence to our counselling sessions. Known as the College Mascot, Shiva is an adorable gentle dog who works daily with our team. She interacts with the boys offering them unconditional reassurance and empathy. 

Social and Emotional Learning

The Mission and Wellbeing Office collaborate with the Students Office to develop and implement a consistent and sequential approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) from Year 5 through to Year 12. Explicit SEL teaching occurs in timetabled AWE wellbeing lessons in Years 5, 6 and 8, as well as throughout the year for all students in our fortnightly Friday Wellbeing Period and the PDHPE curriculum. Our SEL programs are evidence-based as well as data-driven from our student wellbeing surveys.

Our House System 

Since re-structuring the House System in 2015, we now have a vibrant annual House competition known as the Bishops Shield. All students are involved in House competitions throughout the year, earning points through a wide range of activities such as academic endeavours, poetry competitions, creative arts, debating and a wide range of sporting competitions and carnivals.

Peer Mentoring Programs (Years 5 – 12)

We provide structured leadership and mentoring opportunities across the school including our Peer Support Program (Year 10 / Year 7), Big Brother Reading Program (Year 11 / Year 5 & 6) and Primary Buddy System (Year 6 / Year 5). These programs provide a meaningful connection with an older positive role model for the younger students, whilst also building the leadership capacity of our Senior students.

Year 9 AWE
(Augustinian Wellbeing in Education)

In Year 9 we provide a unique and exciting opportunity for the students to experience interesting and valuable activities connecting with our local community.  We give back to society, provide boys with a ‘point of difference’ that is rewarding, stimulating and generous in nature. Year 9 students engage in activities such as cooking and motor mechanics at our local TAFE, sing for children living with disabilities, assist at local infants’ schools, clean up our local beaches and learn about healthy relationships.

Outdoor Education

We identify and nurture learning opportunities when immersed in a natural bush environment. The natural cycles and rhythm of nature draw us closer to our earth and deeper appreciation and connectedness to the wonder and awe of God’s creation. Our young men are involved in a comprehensive outdoor education program from Year 8 through to Year 10 developing their social skills, enhancing human relationships and strengthening their spiritual dimension.

Healthier and Happier

Our canteen is open before school every day, our canteen staff, as well as part-time parent volunteers, are committed to creating seasonal, healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. Most food items are made on site from freshly delivered produce, with minimal use of processed, high salt or sugar additives. Wherever possible, we take into consideration the need to minimise our environmental footprint along with purchasing Australian made produce, supporting the Fiver For A Farmer initiative. 

Our wide variety of menu items cater to all student and staff needs, including some gluten free and vegetarian options. We offer a cashless online SaintsCard ordering system, making advance lunch and recess orders more streamlined and easy for parents to manage.  ‘Create your own’ options allow you to choose a variety of fresh ingredients to build wraps, rolls or salad plate.

Our College Uniform

Our boys have been wearing their Saints uniform with pride since the commencement of the College in 1956. Students are well recognised in the local community by their contemporary and impressive College uniform, including a smart black tailored blazer for Senior students and grey blazer for all other students. Uniform items can be purchased directly from our Uniform Shop, with some items available via our SaintsCard online ordering system.
