Character Strengths

We were certainly blessed with some fabulous weather over the break, a wonderful reminder that we truly live in a beautiful part of the world. Speaking to several of the boys on Monday morning, it seems that many families holidayed in regional Australia while others enjoyed what the Northern Beaches has to offer. As parents, you should be very proud of your sons who greeted me with smiles and conversations asking my holiday whereabouts and were genuinely interested in my responses. Being very biased, we certainly have a wonderfully welcoming, friendly and positive group of boys at St Augustine’s College.

At our first Primary School Assembly on Monday morning, I quoted from one of the best minds the world has seen – Einstein (1879-1955) who says, ‘It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer’. This has been the message the boys have heard all year and supports the work of Carol Dweck regarding ‘mindsets’ which we have been learning about in Positive Education lessons.

The staff encourage the boys to adopt these important messages and continue, by their actions, to be young men of humility – letting others have their turn to shine; of integrity – doing the right thing when no one is watching; of perseverance – doing the things they don’t necessarily like doing until they are successfully completed and be young men of empathy – being aware and supportive of the feelings of others. These are the attitudes that support the College’s core values and ones we hope all boys transition from Year 6 having as core character strengths.

Orientation Days

The College has taken all precautions and acted on advice form NSW Health in preparation for the upcoming Year 5 and Year 7 Orientation Days. COVID-19 cleaning protocols continue to be observed and boys will be kept in grade cohorts throughout the day. Once again, if your son is suffering from any cold like symptoms, he will need to be kept at home with results from a COVID-19 test forwarded to the College.

Year 6

On Friday 23 October, the current Year 6 boys will have the first of two Orientation Days with the new Year 7 boys for 2021. The second day will occur later in the term on Friday 20 November (further details to follow).

On Friday 23 October, the boys will take part in English and Mathematics testing, as well as peer support and ‘getting to know each other’ activities. These tests provide the College with information to best place boys in the appropriate classes for next year. Please reassure your son that the work he has completed in class this year will hold him in good stead to achieve results to the best of his ability.

Year 5 2021 Orientation Day

This day will occur on Friday 30 October, where we welcome 112 new Year 5 boys to the College. During the day, boys will complete some English and Mathematics assessments, have a BBQ lunch, drink and chips and be the audience for drama, music and science shows. They will complete the day with some soccer, touch footy and basketball (very similar to what the current Year 5 boys experienced last year). If time permits our current Year 5 boys will meet their buddies for some question time.

New Stage 3 Teacher

With a reputation for providing a challenging, engaging and creative curriculum, the College was inundated with over 52 applicants for the new Stage 3 teacher for 2021. Already blessed with a wealth of talented teachers in the Primary School, we are pleased to announce that the successful candidate was decided last week. What a wonderful position to be in and a real testament to the positive reputation the College has in the community and wider, to have so many high-quality teachers apply for this position. I will formally announce our new Stage 3 teacher next week.

New Build

Planning has commenced for the new Year 6 classroom which will be located above the current Year 5P classroom. It is currently open terrace space and will be the ideal position to link all Year 6 classes together, further allowing for collaborative group work and flexible teaching purposes.

Parents on Campus

Please remember that parents should not be on the College campus unless they have a pre-arranged meeting with a teacher and have signed in at the Primary School Office.  If you need to call into the Primary Office, please do so via the glass entry door located on Gulliver Street using the intercom system. These protocols are extremely important if contact tracing occurs and our records of attendance are required by NSW Health.

Early Arrivals

Boys are asked not to arrive at the College earlier than 8:00 am, at which time the College Library is open. In some instances, boys may have band, private music lessons or even sport training, which is fine. Lately we have boys arriving at 7.30 am, and with teachers not required for duty until 8.20 am, this leaves them unsupervised for 50 minutes.

As we returned on Monday for Term 4, the College celebrated World Teacher’s Day, which fell during the school holidays on 5 October. On behalf of the wider student body, the 2021 Student Leadership Team extended their gratitude to College Staff for their extraordinary efforts amidst the toughest of circumstances, assisting with a morning tea for the staff, which was organised and provided by the P&F. Our teachers have served as excellent role models this year for their resilience and adaptability, consistently navigating a troublesome period by providing a meaningful and engaging learning experience for which the College community is incredibly grateful. 

At the time of publication, Year 11 students will have completed their Reflection Day, a day of spiritual and internal consideration which allows students to gain a greater understanding of themselves and their peers. The process is underpinned by Humility, the Mission focus for the College in 2020, and is seen as a crucial step in the transition between Year 11 and Year 12.

St Augustine said that “the very perfection of a man is to find out his own imperfections”. During Reflection Day, students will develop their graduate lenses of Humility and Interiority, whilst making invaluable memories within their Tutor Groups and Houses, laying a strong platform for the Class of 2021.

The 2021 Student Leadership Team participated in a Leadership Training Day today. Centred around servant leadership, the team of 15 collaborated with staff leadership and their House Formation Leaders in order to develop positive plans for the next 12 months and to cultivate an immersive and welcoming school culture.

This has already been reflected in our ‘Mullets for Mental Health’ fundraiser, which raised $40,912 for mental health research. The Student Leadership Team endeavours to “work for the good of our students and the St Augustine’s College community and provide a good example and show courage in acting against injustice and wrongdoing,” as pledged in our appointment assembly, was a focal point of our development and planning today.

As Year 11 begins their HSC year on Monday, I would like to pass on some advice to our younger students that I wish I had known from the beginning of my high school journey. Whilst it is a cliché, my five years so far at St Augustine’s College feel like a blur, and I reflect on my junior years with fond memories of my fantastic experiences with the College. It is important to live in the moment and appreciate the diverse range of opportunities that are presented to you.  Your high school memories are ones to cherish, and I encourage all students to “go where there is no path and leave a trail,” in all facets of life.

Music Curricular

Studio Concerts

A key event of the College Music Festival has been Studio Concerts (formerly Studio Recitals), where our private music tuition and Elective Music students have the opportunity to perform in a formal concert setting. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the format and scheduling of the College Music Festival had to be altered and as a result Studio Concerts will be operating as a stand-alone event.

On Tuesday 27 October (Week 3) approximately 100 musicians will take to the stage, performing solos before esteemed special guest artists, their peers and the entire Music Faculty. This year I am delighted to announce David Cousens (musical theatre star), John Morrison (premier Jazz musician and educator), Paul Goodchild (Sydney Symphony Orchestra) and David Holmes (esteemed guitarist/vocalist, producer, songwriter, session musician) as our special guest artists.

Although COVID-19 operating procedures restrict a live parent and community audience, I know the boys will rise to the occasion and deliver a high-quality concert, which will be video recorded for later streaming. Studio Concerts will be held 5.00pm to 7.00pm on Tuesday 27 October across four venues in the Music Centre. Teams of tutors will showcase the excellent work of their students in voice, piano, woodwind, brass, guitar, bass and drums:

Finer details on piano accompanist rehearsals, logistics, refreshments and supervision after school prior to the concerts will be emailed to parents and students shortly.

Primary School Instrumental Program

Our Year 6 instrumentalists have breathed a sigh of relief with the return of regular and full Instrumental Program (IP) lessons this week. From Week 5 of Term 3, Government’s COVID-19 regulations relating to group performances of voice, chanting, woodwind and brass instruments had meant that the Primary School Music curriculum had to be significantly modified. We now look forward to a very musical and productive conclusion to 2020.

A reminder that Years 5 and Year 6 boys will need their instrument, music and equipment for IP lessons each week.

Value of instrumental music and Private Music Tuition Program

There are many benefits of playing a musical instrument in human development. Music is an integral part of human life and is a fundamental part of a culture and identity, a creative pursuit which is often performed in a collaborative or ensemble situation. There have been many studies conducted that link music and increased intelligence in students, but this is not the only benefit. In schools, learning an instrument is a discipline in which students simultaneously develop academic capacity, physical ability and social skills.

All students are encouraged to take up learning and instrument. Private tuition in most instruments and voice is available at the College. Celebration of Mid- Autumn Festival, 2020

The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival is an important traditional festival in Chinese culture. The meaning of the festival is gathering and family reunion. Due to COVID-19 restrictions this year, our International students were unable to travel back to China due to the border closure, meaning most of the parents have not seen their beloved sons for nearly a year.

The College prepared a gift pack including a mooncake, an apple, and a handwritten card for each of the International students in Australia. The round mooncake symbolises prosperity and reunion of the whole family on this special day. In some parts of China people also give red apples to others, to wish for their safety and peace. This is because in Chinese the word for apple (pingguo) sounds very similar with the word for safety (ping’an). Each offshore student also received a special present delivered to the door – mooncake with ice-cream topping. 

Each international student took the opportunity to write a letter home and send it on Moon Festival day. Our International parents were laughing with tears while reading the precious letter. Please see two examples below:

Dear father and mother,

Time flies. We haven’t been able to see each other for 8 months now. I experienced so much during the 8 months. In this sometimes lonely and helpless overseas learning and living life, kinship is the most enduring motivation. Kinship is the sincerest company; kinship is the clearest guidepost. Under the obstruct of the pandemic of the last 8 months, we cannot see each other and now is the Mid-Autumn Festival, as like Wei Wang’s poem “On festive occasions more than ever one thinks of one’s dear ones far away”. How much I miss you cannot be expressed by a single sentence or two. It is like an endless ocean, uncountable.

It is you who look after me for 17 years, sending me to study overseas so I can enjoy a life other people can’t enjoy. This has made my life full of variety. Therefore, on the Mid-Autumn Festival, I wrote a family letter to you, though not many words, to express how much I miss you and love you.

The pandemic has stopped me to come to see you, but it cannot stop me to miss you.

Dear dad and mum,

My exams have finished recently. Japanese speaking exam also finished. I feel ok just the 4U math is still too difficult, maybe I am not smart enough. I hope I can get a 90 in the HSC.

My life in Australia is pretty good. I eat well, having a lot of friends and playing games, not lonely at all. Of course, I keep studying so please do not worry for me. To me, as long as you are doing well, then it is great as I can do so many things myself.

Please do not be too tired, go to bed early, do not always watch Tiktok – I am talking about you. You know how important a good health is.

Buy some mooncake to enjoy. A sense of ritual is a good thing in life!

Meanwhile, there are 11 offshore International students unable to return to the College who have continued their learning journey via online lessons. 

On this special Moon Festival occasion, our International parents asked the International Office to prepare gift packs as a token of their appreciation for their son’s teachers here in Australia. Included were a mooncake, an apple, a handwritten card and a bunch of fresh flowers for these dedicated teachers.

On behalf of all the offshore families, we wish you and your family safety and prosperity forever.

The College has been working with Northern Beaches Council, and has been successful in establishing another permanent Drop off and Pick up Zone in front of College Reception on Alfred Road. Parents are asked to make use of this zone for the safety of all students, and to improve traffic flow around the College precinct during these peak times.

The Gulliver Street “Kiss and Drop” continues to be for Primary students only. Primary parents are reminded that when exiting this zone you left turn only (as per signage).

We received some exciting news in the last week of Term 3, that the NSW Government was going to ease restrictions on Community and School Sport!

This does not mean that things are entirely ‘back to normal’ however, it does mean that our students will be able to compete in their chosen summer sport in Term 4. Please ensure that you continue to follow the COVID-19 guidelines and hygiene protocols put in place for each venue and/or sport.

Old Boy Matthew Philip (2012)

After a very successful season with the Melbourne Rebels professional Rugby Union team, where he was voted their Players Player for the first time, Matt finally cemented a place in the starting side for the Australian Wallabies against the New Zealand All Blacks. If any of you watched the game last Sunday, you would have noticed the towering blond lock in absolutely everything. He was exceptional in all aspects of his play and is growing into a leader amongst the group. We look forward to watching Matt’s continued success and wish him all the best for Game 2 of the Bledisloe Cup this Sunday. 

Some general housekeeping…

Attendance

Attendance at trainings and games is NOT optional. Once a student makes a commitment to a summer sport, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure he attends all sessions and games that are offered. Of course, there are times when this is not possible, and we ask that parents and students are proactive in communicating any known absences to their TIC and coach. Unexplained absences will be followed up and could lead to Friday afternoon or Saturday detenti

If you have registered for a sport, we have submitted teams based on these registrations, you must participate. If you require a change you must see Mr Harvey ASAP.

Uniform

A great part of school sport is representing your school with your friends. A big part of this is wearing the correct uniform at training sessions and games. Although most sports do not have specific training attire (at the moment), uniform on match days will be closely monitored. Please ensure you have the correct gear at all times. If a student is injured and supporting his team, we ask that he does this in College uniform or Sports uniform.

Any student wearing the incorrect uniform will not be allowed to participate in that game. Students wearing incorrect clothing on arrival will be asked to remove it.

Behaviour

Coaches and staff have been asked to closely monitor our student’s behaviour during their sports. While we encourage all students to play hard, it is of equal importance to play fair. Bad language and poor behaviour will be followed up and investigated thoroughly. Students found to be bringing the College into disrepute will be subject to a meeting with the Sportsmaster and Assistant Principal – Sport and Co-Curricular.

All Summer Coaches and Managers attended an induction meeting on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the upcoming season. Topics for discussion were Expectations of coaches, Match Day and training expectations, Attendance taking, Injury management, and Child safety and Protection. It was a very worthwhile experience for staff and coaches and will lead to a better season in all aspects of sport.

This Friday morning was the first session in the Athletic Development program for 2020. Over 200 students from Years 5-8 spent 30 minutes on the College Oval working on their fundamental movement skills, strength and fitness under the watchful eye of Nathan Parnham. We even had a guest coach, Kotoni Ale! This initiative is really a one of a kind in schools of this size and I’m sure the boys will enjoy the next 7 sessions albeit a little bit sore in some muscles they didn’t know they had.

The First V and 17A Basketball teams played practise matches against St Ignatius’ College, Riverview in the holidays. Both teams had wins with all students enjoying the chance to compete at a very high level. Our First and Second XI Cricket teams also played in the holidays against St Pius X with the Seconds registering a win and the Firsts going down in a tight match.

SUMMER SPORTS DRAW 2020

Saturday 17 October sees the start of the summer sport water polo season.  This is St Augustine’s first season in the Combined Schools competition, which features most of the GPS and CAS schools. 

In Round 1, our teams play Sydney Boys High and Scots College at Drummoyne Pool.  Good luck to all teams and enjoy the experience.

Our Primary boys also start their season with the Northern Beaches Water Polo Academy; draw to be advised.

2020 Football season comes to a close

Despite a chunk of the season lost to COVID-19, the MWFA worked particularly hard to ensure as many games could be played across all the age groups.  Midweek games and school holiday games were all scheduled in order to give players the best opportunity to participate. The weekend of 2nd and 3rd October saw all 31 Saints teams appear in a finals weekend with comfortable wins, agonising draws and close losses across the day.  Our U14 Div 1 side was the best performed side of the year, dropping only one game throughout and then winning a thrilling Grand Final at Passmore Reserve.  Our U15/3 side won its Grand Final to make it a three-peat after wins in the U13 (2018) and U14 (2019) competitions.  Well done lads!

With the annual Champion of Champions tournament cancelled this year, the MWFA and NSFA combined to have all its Division 1 teams play in a cross-Association match with aggregate scores across the weekend of 10th and 11th October counting towards an overall Champion Association. U14s took on a sharp Lindfield outfit who were suddenly 2-0 up before the brothers Osbourne entered and Julian toed in a slick chance then Ryan nailed an amazing free kick from 30+m out to beat the ‘keeper and hit the back of the net. The 2-2 score line was a great result from two quality teams.

With no formal Football Presentation Night taking place this year, team awards for Player of the Year and Spirit of Football will be presented at the College in the next few weeks.  The announcement of the Junior and Senior Players of the Year and Junior and Senior Goalkeeper of the Year will also be made at this time.

Thankyou to all our Coaches and Managers for their hard work in ensuring all our teams were well prepared this year.  Our Technical Director, Nick Tomaino again provided quality coaching and technical advice to our teams and Registrar, Jo Sloots, was again in the thick of the administration at the start of the year. Along with the Football Committee, all had great input into another bumper season. Thank you!

In 2021, we are hopeful of the return of the now famous Saints Football social event -  ‘Casino Night’ at Manly Golf Club in June.  Standby for more details!

World Teacher’s Day 2020

World Teacher’s Day was celebrated on 5 October and on Monday 12 October (Day 1, Term 4) P&F volunteers organised a morning tea for teaching staff using funds donated by parents earlier in the year. The morning tea was served following strict COVID-19 protocols in several locations around the College. Thank you to the student leaders who stepped up to help.

P&F Meeting and AGM Thursday 12 November 2020 7pm

You are all welcome to attend the P&F meeting and AGM on Thursday 12 November at 7pm. There will be an update from the Principal as well as discussion on various topics affecting the College community. If there is anything you would like us to discuss on the night, please let me know.

This meeting is likely to be a ZOOM meeting, however if restrictions allow, we would welcome attendance onsite.

Augustinian Kitchen Coordinator – could this be you?

Beth Murphy has done a wonderful job coordinating and raising awareness of the Augustinian Kitchen and her son is graduating this year. Therefore we are looking for a new volunteer to take on the role. It is not very time consuming, but extremely rewarding. (No cooking needed, our lovely team of volunteers looks after that part.) If you are interested, please let me know.
